Mt Cook House
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Located in a heritage area of Wellington, the client’s wanted to extend the existing local colonial style. The site is relatively narrow which resulted in the addition being constrained by the side boundary recession planes. The client’s brief was straightforward, requiring a one room space where they could have friends around for dancing while also allowing the ability for the space to act as a bedsit primarily for family to stay.
The existing house is located partly below the footpath level and the new 1st floor will capture the north and west sun with windows sized to ensure that privacy will not be compromised. A tight stair adjacent to and creating a new entry area provides access to the new 1st floor space that has a kitchenette, shower/laundry room and storage space located within the lowered east side roof. The space has lowered side wall heights extending up to a higher flat ceiling to fit inside the site recession planes. A small balcony to the northeast corner allows the outside in without compromising privacy.
