Mt. Barker House
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Located on the side of the Mt. Barker range this combination of single and two storied house faces out towards the north and west sun with magnificent views of the Wanaka basin and mountains beyond. The client’s brief required a contemporary, provincial French design approach. The L-shaped house is closed off from the south and east with high schist walls, which creates a large internal courtyard, producing a tranquil Parisian garden setting.
A soft French countryside feeling has been achieved by using light tan and ochre coloured mud bricks with a schist base, projecting roofs, schist paving, and a gravel front courtyard. Internally, there is extensive use of simple gib walls and ceilings with exposed timber roof rafters, beams and posts. Finished timber floors are used throughout with tiles to the entry and wet areas. The internal courtyard is bounded by an external covered walkway with extensive use of rustic timber surfaces.
